The annual World Thombosis Day on Sunday 13 October focuses attention on the often overlooked and misunderstood disease of thrombosis. WTD seeks to increase global awareness of thrombosis, including its causes, risk factors, signs/symptoms and evidence-based prevention and treatment. Ultimately, WTD strives to reduce death and disability caused by the condition.
Venous Thromboembolism (VTE), a dangerous and potentially deadly medical condition in which blood clots form (most often) in the deep veins of the leg (known as deep vein thrombosis, DVT) and can travel in the circulation and lodge in the lungs (known as pulmonary embolism, PE). Together, DVT and PE make up venous thromboembolism (VTE).
Hundreds of WTD educational events will be hosted around the world on 13 October.
